Kumbakonam History

A noted mid-town for its glory “Mahamagam” conducted at the sacred “Mahamagam Tank” once in 12 years in the month of “Masi” (February) in a leap year.

Situated on the banks of the River Cauvery on the north side and The River “Arasalaru” on the south side in the Thanjavur District. It is one of the oldest businesses and industrial centre noted for Brass, Bronze, Stainless Steel, Silk Sarees and Bronze / Copper statue Artistics.

The Town Possess, some very big famous temples which were sung by samaya kuravas (Saivait Saint’s) and Alwars (Vashinavit saint’s)

(1) SRI ADHI KUMBESWARAR:- When the world submerged in water due to “Pralayam” (entire earth planet submerged in water) Lord Siva by his Bow and Arrow broke a vessel called “Kumbam” (an big vessel where in all seeds of living organism are kept) and rejuvenated the earth by bringing this Town alive first. Hence the name “Kumbakonam” derived, since have lot of Famous Temples in and around. Now, the town has gained one of the best Tourists and Historical place of South India and in particular Tamilnadu.

This is the “Sthla Purana” of this temple and the town.

(2) SRI SARANGAPANI TEMPLE:- This is stated to be 3rd among the 108 Diviya Shetrams, where Lord Maha Vishnu had landed on the earth after rejunation of the planet with his Chariot (Ratha) directly from Vaikundam. He blesses the universe in his elite uthana sayana posture.

(3) SRI CHAKARAPAANI TEMPLE:- The word means Maha vishnu’s “sacred wheel” (chakra) planted on the earth after rejunvation for bringing up and protecting all the “Jeevarasi” (all living thing’s of the earth)

Apart from those above the following are also noted temples of unique importance and belief

Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple and Sri Abimugeswarar Temple at the North and East bank of the Mahamaham Tank. Sri Nageswaran, Sri Kalahestieswarar, Sri Bana puriswarar, Sri Gowthameswarar, Sri Vizha Someswarar, Adhi Kambata Viswanathar all saivait temples and Sri Adhi Varaha perumal, Sri Govindaraja Perumal, Sri Rajagopala Swamy, Sri Ramaswamy, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Sri Krishnan Temple all “Vaishnava” Temples.

The famous temples nearby are Sri Oppliappan, Sri Nageswaran at Thirunageswaram (Raghu Planet), Kezhaperumpallam (Kethu) Sri Swaminatha Swamy Temple, Sri Valampuri Vinayagar at Swamimalai, Sri Garbarakshambigai Temple, Thirukarukavur, Sri Yoga Narsimhar Temple, Pullapudhukudi, Swamimalai, Sri Sarabeshwarar Sannathi at Sri Kambagareswarar Temple, Thirubhuvanam. Sri Mahalinga Swamy Temple, Thiruidaimaruthur, Sri Maha Saraswathy Temple, Kuthanur, Sri Lalithambigai at Sri Lalithambigai sametha Meganatha Swami Temple , Thirumeechur, Peralam.

Sri Durga Sannathi at Patteswaram Sri Denupureeswarar Temple, Sri “Sun” Planet temple at Suriyanarayanar Kovil, “Moon” Planet Temple, ( Chandran) at Thingallur, Budhan Sannathi at Sri Suvedharanyeswarar Swami Temple, Thiruvenkadu. At Kanjanur “Sukuran” (Venus) Sri Selva Muthukumara Swamy Sannathi at Sri Vaidyanathar Temple ,Vaidheswaran Kovil Sevvai (Mars), Alangudi (Guru), Thirunallar “Sani” (Satun) and so on.
